Revelation - CNTD

1:2  John faithfully reported the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ-everything he saw.
This verse tells us clearly why the book of Revelation is so very important:
It is the word of God
It is the testimony of Jesus Christ
What we will hear with our ears, John SAW with his eyes! Can you imagine having the scenes of the end of the world played out right in front of your eyes!?
1:3  God blesses the one who reads this prophecy to the church, and he blesses all who listen to it and obey what it says. For the time is near when these things will happen.
Who does God bless?
The one who reads the book of Revelation out loud.
In Jewish culture it was common to hear public readings of Scripture. (see Nehemiah 8:2-3)
Christians continued this tradition when they would read the Gospels and Paul's letters out loud because copies wee not available for all to possess.
The ones who listen and obey what the book of Revelation says.
Jesus had already stated this principle in Luke 11:28 “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”
As believers we must be ready for Christ's coming-be prepared.
What is the best way to be prepared?
Hear and obey!
1:4-5a This letter is from John to the seven churches in the province of Asia. Grace and peace from the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come; from the sevenfold Spirit before his throne; and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness to these things, the first to rise from the dead, and the commander of all the rulers of the world.
Who did John write this letter to? The 7 churches in the province of Asia
These seven churches were actual churches but they also represented all the churches down through history. We will study the details of the seven churches in coming lessons.
Grace and peace – This phrase was a standard greeting in the ancient world.
It is unique for it includes the Gentile greeting – grace (charis) and the Hebrew greeting –peace (shalom).
The early church was the first to combine these two greetings.
Why do you think the early church combined the Gentile & Jewish greetings?
They were declaring that God had given His truths to all people.
Who does John say the letter is from?
from the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come
from the sevenfold Spirit
from Jesus Christ
What descriptive statement about God do we see in these verses?
The one who is, who always was, and who is still to come.
